Drinking Ales

Beer and Gourmet Food Gift Baskets – Ales, Lagers and Lights

I found a great gift for some of my guy buddies and colleagues. Now, first I have to tell you that I am a girl who likes wine, but not beer. But when I want to impress one of my guy friends, I want to send something he likes, not necessarily what I like. So what guy doesnt like beer? I dont really know a lager from an ale, or an amber from a light, but when I decided to send a gift basket, I thought I should learn at least a little bit. So now I know that an ale is made with yeast that ferments from the top, and a lager with yeast that ferments from the bottom of the beer barrel. But why do you care about that?

A top fermented ale ferments faster than a lager, resulting in a fruiter, sweeter flavor. The flavors are sometimes described as flowery, fruity, or like grass or hay.

A bottom fermented lager ferments slower and at a lower temperature, so it is crisper and allows more of the flavor of the hops to come through. The hop gives the bitter flavor and aroma.

Light beers have fewer calories, and are often characterized as having less intense flavor.

Beer gift baskets will feature different types of beers, ales and lagers, light beers, and beers from different countries, large breweries and microbreweries. I try to figure out what types of beers the person I am sending the gift basket to loves, and find one that features those types.

Salty products and nuts go well with beer, so I look for pretzels, chips, nuts, and snack mixes to go with the beer in the gift basket.

I also figure the guy doesnt really care about the basket itself, it will probably end up full of golf tees, or left over change or a sundry of other items. So I think of the basket its self as a functional object and pick appropriately.

So, next time you want to impress one of your favorite guys, think of a beer gift basket. Go ahead, send him one today. Hell love you for it!
